FROG & FERN TATTOO
Established in 2023, Frog and Fern is a queer and trans owned private tattoo studio based just 20 minutes outside Portland in Windham Maine.
Housing nominated best tattoo artists in Portland, our studio is dedicated to giving our clients a comfortable, safe and silly goose time no matter your gender, sexuality, race, weight or age (so long as you’re over 18). We understand that getting tattooed can be an intimate, sacred or healing journey for most and want to ensure you not only leave with artwork you love, but a positive experience you never forget. Our artists are incredibly versatile and specialize in illustrative, fine line, black and grey or color work and are always looking for an opportunity to work in different styles. We operate by appointment only and our artists books open quarterly so be sure to follow us on Instagram so you don’t miss a booking session!
MEET OUR ARTISTS
Sam (they/them) is co-owner and artist at Frog and Fern Tattoo who specializes in fine-line black and grey and illustrative color work. They have been an artist ever since they can remember, always drawing, painting and taking as many art classes as they could in high school. After growing up mostly in the Midwest, Sam went to college in Northwest Ohio to study Visual Communications Technology with a focus in print media and photography. In their last two years at Bowling Green State University, Sam began working at the local tattoo shop as a receptionist. After graduating in 2017, Sam began their apprenticeship at the same tattoo shop and worked there for two years before moving to Maine in October of 2019. It was at this time, Sam met their now wife and Co-owner, Airynn. For almost four years the two of them worked together before deciding to open Frog and Fern in 2023. Sam is very excited to curate a safe and inclusive space for everyone to get tattooed. Airynn (she/her) is co-owner and artist at Frog and Fern Tattoo who specializes in large scale illustrative color work. Airynn is an extremely versatile and well rounded artist who can capture your vision no matter the style whether that be illustrative, realism, traditional, or a cover up. Airynn grew up in Maine before moving to Colorado in high school and attending Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design where she studied children’s book illustration. Airynn’s tattoo journey began in 2009 when she started her apprenticeship at a street shop in Denver Colorado. Two years later in 2011, Airynn went on to own her first tattoo studio before deciding to move back to Maine in 2014 to open her second tattoo shop in Portland’s Old Port. It was at this studio, Airynn met now spouse and Co-owner, Sam. After four more years of working around Portland, the two were finally able to open Frog and Fern in 2023. Airynn is excited to welcome both existing and new clients into a new private safe space. Her books open by appointment only, so head over to her IG to get updates!
